3 Heat Pump Issues You Should Never Ignore

Matt Moore • Oct 17, 2019
Heat pumps are known to be one of the best heating and cooling systems to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home; popular because they are effective, energy efficient and have a good lifespan.

With regular heat pump servicing, you can get between ten and fifteen years use out of your heat pump, and maintenance should start from its first full year of use – this will undeniably extend its lifespan. Its durability will depend on how you use it, how often you have it serviced and the local climate of where you live. For example, heat pumps Christchurch and the Canterbury surrounding areas need a heat pump with a good defrost cycle to prevent an accumulation of ice on the coil which hinders the heat pumps capacity to generate heat.

However, even a well-maintained heat pump will eventually fail in time. You will most likely contact us if your unit starts making unusual noises or emitting strange odours, but there are other signs your heat pump needs attention.

1. The unit is not providing the air temperature you want it to

If you are consistently checking the settings of your heat pump unit, it’s a sign that something is amiss. During normal use there may be the odd occasion when your unit provides warm air instead of cool and vice versa, but this should not be a regular occurrence. If your unit fails to produce warm air completely (similarly for cool air), it can be an indication of a serious problem.

2. Inconsistent temperature and humidity around your home

If you experience hot or cold spots in your home or notice condensation in specific rooms, there is something going on with your heat pump system – there should be no disparity between rooms. Often this can be resolved through heat pump repairs, but if the problem persists a new heat pump will be needed.

3. Your heat pump keeps short cycling

The benefit of a heat pump is that it maintains a set temperature. To do this the heat pump will cycle on and off as and when it is needed; however, if you notice that it is turning on and off more frequently than usual, it is malfunctioning. You may be tempted to ignore this as you are still getting some warm or cool air, but short cycling puts additional stress on the unit, and it will eventually fail. It could be as simple as a new fuse to fix it, or it could be a more serious issue.

If you detect any of these signs, get in touch. To stay comfortable in summer and winter your heat pump needs to be performing to its optimum capacity, ignoring any problems may mean that small issues escalate, and you need a whole new HVAC system.

Many Kiwis turn to various heating methods during the colder months, especially in Christchurch or elsewhere in the South Island. As the needle drops, portable space heaters such as the unflued portable gas heaters can be a popular choice as a matter of cost. However, heat pumps, though initially more expensive, are worth it as you make your money back in the long-term as you are using a lot less energy to heat the same space.
