Heat pumps are known to be one of the best heating and cooling systems to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home; popular because they are effective, energy efficient and have a good lifespan.

The most popular way that Kiwis heat our homes is through air source heat pumps. There are three types:

• Single-split heat pumps:

Comprising of an external mounted unit and an internal unit that is mounted to the wall, floor or ceiling of the room that is being heated or cooled.

• Multi-split heat pumps:

Providing heat and cooling across a larger space via a larger outdoor unit that services more than one indoor unit.

• Ducted heat pumps:

Providing heat and cooling from an outdoor unit that is transported around the houses through flexible ducting in the floor and ceiling and released into multiple rooms through vents.

The single-split and multi-split heat pumps are most used, but ducted heat pumps are becoming more popular. Single-split and multi-split heat pumps can be installed into most homes, and ducted heat pump systems are more complex to install (especially as a retrofit), so why are more and more people investing in this heating system?

They are highly efficient

Ducted heat pump systems are the ultimate home heating and ventilation system. Unlike the split pumps which require strategic placement, this system services the whole house without losing the ability to control zones or specific rooms.

The whole house can be kept at a comfortable temperature removing cold spots and opportunities for damp to develop. Ducted heating cycles the air between 2 and 5 times per hour which keeps the air moving and prevents stale air causing condensation.

They are very discreet

One of the downsides of the single-split and multi-split heat pumps is that they require the internal unit to be mounted in the room, and typically in a very noticeable place on the wall. The only part of the system that you see are the vents and the control pad on the wall.

The ducted system does not rely on a forced fan system and so are exceptionally quiet. You will not hear that they are on when they are heating your home which adds to their appeal.

Heat Pump Subsidies Added to Government Scheme

News! Eligible home owners can claim for grants!

The government has expanded its home insulation programme to include efficient wood burners and heat pumps. This was announced by the Energy Minister Megan Woods in Christchurch on the 18 July. The programme started in July last year, focused initially on insulation subsidies, but is now broadneing it to efficient heating as part of the governments Winter Support package.

To be eligible for insulation and heater grants, home owners must have a Community Services Card or live in a lower-income area. In most cases, homes will need to have ceiling and underfloor insulation installed before qualifying for a grant for a heater.

Recommendations for efficent heat pump usage

You may have heard conflicting views on this topic but we highly recommend you use your heat pumps timer. Why? We don't recommend running your heat pump 24 hours a day, especially if you are at work during the day. Use the timer to activate your heat pump an hour before you arrive home for a more comfortable home. We do not recommend leaving your heat pump running 24 hours a day unless snow is on the ground otherwise you will have a higher power bill. We will certainly show you how to use your heat pump after installation.

Keeping your heatpump regulary maintained and clean is key to a high performing heat pump. Upto 35% of your winter power bill can be accounted to heating so making sure it is working to it's best is paramount. Getting the temperature right can save a lot and we recommend setting it anywhere between 18c-22c
